The White House has withdrawn Richard Schroyer’s nomination to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after the Senate failed to advance his appointment.
Mr Schroyer, who was serving as a senior adviser to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, was nominated by President Donald Trump in June to become an assistant DHS secretary overseeing ICE.
His nomination stalled after Republican Senator Rand Paul sought details about investigations into shootings involving agents in Minnesota. Mr Schroyer did not progress beyond the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, although Mr Paul’s office said the senator had not expressed opposition to him.
David Venturella is currently the senior official performing the duties of ICE director. He took on the role after Todd Lyons announced his departure from the position in April.
ICE has not had a director confirmed by the Senate since 2017.
