Russell Brand was convicted of rape and sexual assault in the UK after a trial in which, commentators said, his attempts to defend himself created difficulties for his case.
The comedian’s conviction was discussed on The Low Down, a programme produced by TMZ and the New York Post, where presenters examined his public statements and courtroom approach.
Harvey referred to an interview between Brand and Piers Morgan in which Morgan read out earlier remarks by the comedian about men needing to “unpick the conditions stopping women” from having sex with them.
Charles said the comments appeared inconsistent with Brand’s emphasis on consent during the trial. Caitlyn suggested that Brand may have assumed consent rather than explicitly seeking it, given his profile as a comedian and performer.
The discussion also focused on claims that Brand selected people at shows, charmed them in public and behaved differently in private. Harvey said Brand had struggled when questioned by police about an allegation of anal rape.
Brand had argued that media coverage made it difficult for him to receive a fair trial. Charlie countered that he had actively courted publicity and supplied the media with controversial remarks, while the presenters said the allegations had not been created by the press.
The commentators also highlighted the UK court’s relatively restrained handling of the proceedings, describing its lack of theatricality as beneficial to an impartial trial, even if it offered less material for media coverage.
