Real Madrid are closing in on the signing of Manchester United academy prospect JJ Gabriel, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano saying a verbal agreement between the Spanish club and the 16-year-old is almost complete.
Gabriel has attracted interest from several leading European clubs, but his representatives have reportedly told suitors that Real Madrid is his preferred destination ahead of a possible January move.
Real Madrid agreement with JJ Gabriel is ‘almost there’
Romano said the formal stages of the transfer had not yet been completed and that no official announcement was expected immediately. However, he indicated that an early ‘Here We Go’ confirmation could come in 2027.
“Get ready, because one of the first ‘here we go’ for 2027 is coming, and it’s gonna be JJ Gabriel to Real Madrid,” Romano said.
He added: “Not a surprise this one, I told you since September. I told you Real Madrid are pushing, leading the race for weeks.
“And now, the agreement is almost done between JJ Gabriel and Real Madrid.
“Nothing will be signed this week in terms of [an] official statement. So, [for] formal steps, we have to be a little bit more patient.
“But in terms of verbal agreement, we are almost there.”
Manchester United have made efforts to keep the attacking prospect at Old Trafford, including offering him a scholarship agreement at Carrington. Those proposals have reportedly not persuaded Gabriel to remain with the club.
The teenager is understood to believe that Real Madrid would offer the right environment for his development. The Spanish club is also keen to manage the move carefully, with its relationship with United and the necessary legal procedures both in consideration.
Manchester United face losing highly rated academy prospect
Gabriel’s departure would represent a significant loss for United. The versatile forward is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in English football and was named the club’s academy player of the year last season.
His potential has led to suggestions that he could eventually become a player worth around £100 million. United will now hope the remaining formalities do not result in the loss of another highly rated academy graduate to Real Madrid.
