Tottenham are reportedly planning to keep Luca Williams-Barnett at the club beyond the January transfer window, with manager Roberto De Zerbi keen to provide the highly rated teenager with further first-team opportunities.
The 18-year-old made his Premier League debut during Spurs’ 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace and is understood to have impressed during his cameo appearance. That display has prompted the club to reconsider earlier plans for a temporary move.
Tottenham reconsider Luca Williams-Barnett loan plans
Tottenham had been considering sending Williams-Barnett out on loan in January, with several clubs reportedly interested in signing him on a temporary basis. Regular senior football was viewed as a possible way to support his development after limited opportunities in north London earlier this season.
However, his showing against Crystal Palace appears to have strengthened the case for keeping him within De Zerbi’s senior squad for the remainder of the campaign.
The Tottenham manager believes Williams-Barnett can make an impact and is keen to increase his involvement when opportunities arise. De Zerbi has already spoken positively about the academy graduate’s potential, describing him as a “special talent”.
The change in approach reflects a growing belief that remaining at Tottenham could now be more beneficial than leaving on loan, provided the teenager receives sufficient playing time.
Spurs will still need to manage Williams-Barnett’s development carefully, but his Premier League debut has given the coaching staff further reason to consider him for a more regular role.
