A father is facing the prospect of raising his two young children alone after his wife and mother were killed in a crash involving a Porsche in Point Cook, Melbourne.
Neha Bommali, 33, and her mother-in-law, Rama Devi, 67, were travelling in a Toyota Corolla when it collided with the Porsche at the intersection of Boardwalk Boulevard and Innisfail Drive at about 9.40pm on Wednesday.
Both women died at the scene. The Porsche driver, a 53-year-old man from Point Cook, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Bommali’s husband, Varun Gunna, described the loss in a fundraising appeal, saying: “In one devastating moment, I lost the love of my life and my mother.”
He said his 75-year-old father, Tulsi Prasad, had lost his lifelong companion, while the couple’s three-and-a-half-year-old son, Haarav, and one-year-old daughter, Vivanvi, had lost their mother and grandmother.
Gunna described his wife as “the light and energy” of their home. He said she was kind-hearted, vibrant and passionate about dance, and that the family had recently gathered to celebrate Vivanvi’s first birthday.
Devi had travelled from India to Australia on a tourist visa to spend time with her grandchildren. Gunna said: “My mother traveled across the world out of pure love for us. She was the gentle anchor of our family.”
The family hopes to repatriate both women to India for Hindu cremation rituals and traditional funeral rites surrounded by relatives and loved ones.
Money raised will also go towards travel and funeral costs, as well as supporting the two children. Gunna said he could not carry the financial and logistical burden alone and asked for prayers and support for his family.
Police investigations into the Point Cook crash are continuing. Officers have urged anyone who witnessed the collision or has CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.
