An 18-year-old motorcyclist has been killed in a crash involving a Mitsubishi vehicle in Highland City, Florida, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies were called to the junction of Hancock Avenue Southeast and US 98 South at about 3.24pm on Friday, September 11, according to the sheriff’s office.
Investigators said the motorcyclist had been travelling north on US 98 and was allegedly speeding while changing lanes and passing other vehicles.
At the same time, a Mitsubishi was entering the northbound carriageway from Hancock Avenue Southeast and attempting to cross towards the southbound lanes. The vehicle moved into the motorcyclist’s path, and the motorcycle struck its rear passenger door.

The impact caused extensive damage to both vehicles and threw the motorcyclist from his motorcycle. He was wearing a helmet, officials said.
Emergency responders carried out lifesaving treatment at the scene, but the teenager was pronounced dead there.
The driver of the Mitsubishi, who investigators said was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has not released the driver’s name. The investigation remains ongoing.
