Nicki Minaj has been tipped for a possible White House press secretary role after a video showed the rapper discussing politics aboard Air Force One with senior communications official Steve Cheung.
Cheung, the White House communications director, shared the footage on X and captioned it: “Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary!”
In the video, Minaj explains her support for US President Donald Trump, saying: “Well, it’s exploding because we have a president that understands economics, first of all.”
She added: “I’ve said before the President is naturally a businessman. He’s worked his way out of, you know, not having a dollar left in the bank.
“So if he can do that with himself and his own finances, surely he knows what to do with the country.”
The White House’s official X account responded with an eyes emoji, while Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz addressed Minaj’s fanbase, writing: “Hey Barbz, what do we think about this idea??”
Informal nominations have reportedly been made following the abrupt departure of former White House press secretary Katie Zacharia.
Zacharia’s time in the role lasted only five days. Her first briefing lasted less than 15 minutes, during which she largely read from a script and took questions from three reporters.
She was dismissed after a series of difficult media interviews in mid-October and growing pressure on the Trump administration.
It remains unclear whether Minaj is genuinely under consideration. The rapper, a longtime Trump supporter, has continued to appear alongside the president as part of his celebrity entourage during a nationwide tour aimed at boosting support ahead of the midterm elections.
Minaj also joined Trump at a rally in Michigan, appearing on stage dressed head-to-toe in Gucci.
Before her appearance, Trump drew attention to Minaj’s figure by telling the crowd her “beautiful ass” was “hard to miss”. He then asked her to “stand up” as supporters cheered, adding that he hoped she was not “insulted” by the remark.
Minaj later praised the president, saying he had “changed the energy of the country” and that he had “given us a future to look forward to”.
