A 64-year-old man was arrested after an alleged assault during an anti-immigration protest in Melbourne, where police intervened as rival groups clashed.
Hundreds attended the March for Australia rally in the city’s central business district on Sunday, while Unite Against Racism Victoria, Unionists for Refugees and the Refugee Action Collective staged opposing demonstrations.
Tensions escalated after a protester knocked a One Nation hat from the man’s head when he appeared to perform a Nazi salute. The man then allegedly attempted to punch the protester, prompting officers to move in.
Police wrestled the One Nation supporter to the ground as more officers arrived at the intersection of Collins and Swanston streets.
Victoria Police said the Wantirna man was arrested and released pending summons. “It’s alleged the Wantirna man assaulted another man at the intersection of Collins and Swanston streets about 1.25pm,” a statement said.
Police added that the man was also alleged to have performed a Nazi salute earlier. No injuries were reported.
One Nation merchandise, including bright orange shirts and hats, was prominent among those attending the rally. The party has been supported by anti-immigration groups for its plans to substantially reduce migration if it enters government, despite warnings that such cuts could damage the economy and lead to labour shortages.
Police urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers.
