Aston Villa’s transfer decisions involving Ollie Watkins and Nicolas Jackson have been questioned by former club scout Bryan King after a major reshaping of the squad this summer.
Watkins left Villa Park for Al Hilal in a deal worth £51 million after deciding he wanted a new challenge. Villa then spent around £65 million to sign Jackson from Chelsea.
King believes the decision to allow Watkins to depart before recruiting Jackson is difficult to understand. He also questioned why Villa pursued players Chelsea appeared willing to move on, including Jackson and Alejandro Garnacho, following the club’s significant deal involving Morgan Rogers.

Jackson spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich, scoring 11 goals, and has already opened his account for Villa. He scored in the Champions League victory over Club Brugge, giving manager Unai Emery an early indication of what the forward could offer.
Emery is familiar with Jackson from their time together at Villarreal and will hope the striker can develop into a key player. Greater consistency in front of goal would also ease the criticism surrounding the transfer.
Villa have experienced considerable movement between the clubs, with goalkeeper Emi Martinez also leaving for Chelsea. Emery must now settle his new arrivals quickly as the team seeks to recover from a disappointing start to the season.
Jackson’s performances could ultimately justify Villa’s investment, but King’s assessment has left questions over the club’s recruitment strategy and whether the summer’s changes have clearly strengthened the squad.
