A 77-year-old man convicted of beating a woman to death with a hammer in Florida in 1995 has been executed at Florida State Prison near Starke. Curtis Wilkie Beasley was pronounced dead at 6.12pm on Tuesday after receiving a three-drug lethal injection. He was convicted of the first-degree murder, robbery and grand theft of Carolyn Monfort, who was 62 when she was killed. The court also refused to halt the…

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth is expected to announce a 20% reduction in the number of generals and admirals across the military, in the latest effort to reshape the Pentagon’s senior leadership. The planned announcement is due to be made on Wednesday during a rare address to military officers at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. DataAnnotation says it blocked Cornell student Matthew Ingalls from its platform in May 2024, months before he was accused of sexually assaulting a classmate at a fraternity house. The company said Ingalls was an independent contractor rather than an employee and had not had access to its platform or its business since he was blocked. A DataAnnotation spokesperson said: “Jane Doe’s allegations of assault are horrifying. While this individual had signed up on our platform, we blocked him in May 2024. He has had no access to our platform or our company at any point since then.” The clarification follows…

Australian scientists are urging a multimillion-dollar international effort to investigate the Wilkes Subglacial Basin in East Antarctica, an almost uncharted region containing enough ice to raise global sea levels by up to four metres. Researchers from 14 countries said major gaps in knowledge meant scientists could not reliably predict when substantial ice loss from the basin might occur. They said Australia was well placed to lead the work, but the scale of the challenge meant it could not be undertaken by one nation alone. The review, led by the Australian Centre for Excellence in Antarctic Science and published in Nature…

ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson spent 10 weeks mimicking the behaviour of a problem gambler while placing online sports bets, in an attempt to see how bookmakers would respond to reckless betting. His experiment led DraftKings to make him a VIP, highlighting how sportsbooks responded to the pattern of gambling he had adopted. Pearson discussed what happened during an appearance on The Takeout, describing the way his betting behaviour was designed to resemble that of someone struggling with gambling addiction. The experiment focused on how online sports books respond when a customer displays increasingly reckless betting behaviour.
