Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to warn that the international order established after the Second World War is no longer fit for purpose, as he calls for a new framework to meet changing global challenges. In a speech to the Atlantic Council in New York, delivered on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Mr Albanese will argue that alliances and partnerships remain essential despite the pressures facing the global system. He is expected to say that assumptions which shaped international affairs after the Cold War — including that openness brought security, efficiency was more important than…

Melissa Howard, 49, was indicted by a DeKalb County grand jury on 15 September. She faces 16 counts of Medicaid fraud and 15 counts of making false statements and writings. Prosecutors allege that she submitted claims for services which had not been delivered while she…
A Florida couple have been arrested on felony child-neglect charges after their six-month-old daughter was found unresponsive and later recorded with a blood alcohol level of 0.383, according to an arrest affidavit. Desirea Uzunboylu and Jessie Waldroup, from Port Richey in Pasco County, were taken into custody on 17 September following the incident, which happened on 8 September. The couple’s seven-year-old son had returned home from school and found his baby sister unresponsive in a playpen, while his parents were asleep in the living room, investigators said. He woke them and they called emergency services. First responders found the baby…
Flights bound for Washington Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia were held at their departure airports on Wednesday because of runway construction, disrupting services across a wide area of the United States. The ground stop affected flights originating in parts of the south-east, mid-Atlantic, north-east, Florida, the Great Lakes region and the Midwest, according to the US Federal Aviation Administration’s National Airspace System status information. The restriction was initially scheduled to remain in place until 11.30am local time, although air traffic authorities warned that it could be extended. A later FAA advisory said passengers could face arrival delays and airborne…

Iran will not surrender in its war with the United States but remains committed to diplomacy to end the conflict, President Masoud Pezeshkian told the United Nations General Assembly. The US delegation walked out as Mr Pezeshkian began speaking. The US mission to the UN did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Addressing representatives of the 193-member General Assembly, the Iranian president said his country had acted only in self-defence after attacks by the US and Israel. “Yes they did hit us but we did not bend the knee,” Mr Pezeshkian said. “We have only defended ourselves. We…
Measles cases have surged across Pennsylvania and neighbouring Maryland, while New York City and Washington DC have reported only single-digit totals, underscoring the sharply localised nature of the United States outbreak. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded 3,471 confirmed cases across 47 US jurisdictions by September 17, 2026 — well above the 2,289 cases reported during the whole of 2025 and the highest annual total in 35 years. Almost 95 per cent of this year’s cases were among people who were unvaccinated or whose vaccination status was unknown. The CDC said 39 new outbreaks had been reported in…
Rome’s Colosseum has been closed to the public after a 22-year-old worker fell to his death while carrying out an illumination project. Andrea Moretti, who specialised in working at height using ropes, had been installing cabling inside the ancient amphitheatre late on Tuesday when he fell. The archaeological park said the circumstances of the incident were being investigated. Thousands of visitors had entered the Colosseum early on Wednesday before the closure could be put in place, with the site due to shut once they had left. Italy’s Premier Giorgia Meloni said she was “deeply shocked and saddened” by Mr Moretti’s…
