As the United States marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, former San Francisco EMT and paramedic Ed Sawicki is using his own experience of responding to the disaster to support first responders dealing with trauma. Sawicki was among those who travelled to New York in the aftermath of the attacks. He later told KTVU that the experience had a lasting impact and helped shape his commitment to improving mental health support for emergency workers. His work now forms part of the Strengthen Your Mind Initiative, which provides programmes focused on stress management, resilience and wellbeing for first…
A missing bag, an expiring flight and a chance encounter at Melbourne Airport have inspired The Airport Chaplain, a new SBS drama starring Hugo Weaving and Shabana Azeez. The eight-part series, which premiered on SBS and SBS On Demand on 26 August 2026, follows Tobias Wallace, an airport chaplain who acts as an unofficial fixer for passengers and staff while clashing with his new boss, terminal manager Mira Ansari-Cole. Its origins can be traced to August 2023, when producer Jude Troy left an Uber after attending a screening of her series Mother and Son at Melbourne’s ACMI. The car drove…
Jacob Coxon has resigned from Anthropic, warning that the company and rival OpenAI are “gambling with our lives” in a race to develop increasingly powerful artificial intelligence. Coxon, who previously worked at OpenAI, said the two firms were moving towards “self-improving superintelligence” without sufficient safeguards. He told Jo Ling Kent that advanced AI could eventually pose a serious threat to humanity. “The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade,” Coxon wrote in a public statement announcing his departure. He said his concerns were not a publicity exercise, adding: “This is…
JD Vance was interrupted by a protester carrying a Mexican flag as he addressed the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas on Thursday night. The vice-president was one of the final two speakers at the first-ever Republican midterm convention, taking the stage at the American Airlines Center before President Donald Trump delivered the closing address. The protester disrupted Vance’s speech as he spoke to Republican supporters. Vance responded by telling the person to leave for Mexico, prompting a sustained show of approval from the crowd. The incident came during a convention designed to rally Republican voters ahead of November’s midterm elections,…
Beth Stern has welcomed her husband Howard Stern’s move into streaming, saying the new HBO Max venture means the radio star will spend fewer days working and more time at home. Speaking at New York Fashion Week in Manhattan, Beth, 54, described the partnership between HBO Max and SiriusXM as “such a wonderful thing” and added: “I mean, so Howard!” Howard Stern’s long-running programme will continue as a live weekly show on SiriusXM’s Howard 100 channel, with the first episode of the new season due on Monday, September 14. A filmed and edited version of the programme will then be…
A man has been arrested over an alleged Skid Row election fraud scheme in which homeless people were paid to sign ballot petitions using the identities of registered California voters, federal prosecutors said. James Brass, 47, of Victorville, was detained on Thursday, September 10, and is accused of working with two petition collectors, Courtney Price, 49, and Jateisha Herron, 33. According to the US Department of Justice, the group allegedly obtained details of registered voters from a database between February and August 2026. Brass and Price are then said to have given the information to people on Skid Row in…
Chris Fagan has warned Brisbane cannot simply expect another response at the Gabba after their 53-point qualifying-final defeat by Sydney, insisting that relying on past comebacks would repeat the mistake that contributed to last week’s collapse. The Lions face Adelaide in a semi-final on Saturday night, having been comprehensively outplayed by an under-strength Swans side at the SCG. Brisbane had won 10 of their previous 11 matches before the defeat. Fagan’s side recovered from a 38-point qualifying-final loss to Geelong last year before going on to win the premiership, but the coach stressed that history offered no guarantee of another…
Gander International Airport became an unexpected refuge for thousands of passengers after the September 11 attacks, as aircraft diverted from US airspace began arriving in the remote Newfoundland town. Today, the airport handles only around five scheduled flights a day. But on 11 September 2001, its runways were suddenly filled with wide-bodied jets as part of Canada’s Operation Yellow Ribbon. In all, 38 international flights were directed to Gander, carrying more than 6,600 passengers and crew. The town, whose population was then about 10,000, was required to accommodate a number of visitors equivalent to roughly two-thirds of its own population.…
Global bond markets came under renewed pressure on Friday as a sharp rise in oil prices intensified fears that central banks may need to keep raising interest rates to contain inflation. Brent crude jumped by about 6% overnight, reaching a four-month high of $109.97 a barrel, as oil shipments remained restricted through the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating attacks involving the United States and Iran. Iran-aligned Houthi forces also took control of Yemen’s port of Mocha, increasing concern over Saudi exports and shipping through the Red Sea. ([investing.com](https://www.investing.com/news/economy-news/global-bonds-fall-as-surging-oil-prices-inflame-inflation-risks-4897139)) The renewed energy shock pushed government borrowing costs higher across major markets.…
