Japan’s wholesale inflation remained elevated in August, strengthening the case for the Bank of Japan to consider another interest rate rise as food prices continued to climb. The corporate goods price index, which tracks the prices companies charge one another for goods and services, rose 2.7% from a year earlier, according to preliminary data released by the Bank of Japan on Thursday September 11. The increase followed a revised 2.5% rise in July and matched economists’ expectations. Food and beverage prices were 5% higher than a year earlier, accelerating from July’s revised 4.7% increase. Prices for agricultural, forestry and fishery…
A massive sinkhole has opened beside Nicolas Cage’s beachfront home in Malibu, forcing evacuations from dozens of nearby properties after powerful waves and coastal erosion damaged a private road leading to the actor’s $10.5 million mansion. The collapse happened on Sea Level Drive in western Malibu at about 5.45am on Tuesday, September 8. Part of the driveway and roadway fell away, leaving a deep crater close to the property and cutting off access for residents and emergency services. The City of Malibu declared a local emergency and ordered the evacuation of 31 properties in the area. The affected homes were…
Two brothers accused of stealing Ford trucks and a U-Haul rental in the Renton Highlands area over a six-month period have been arrested and remain in jail. King County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 37-year-old Jerad Bruce on 15 June. His younger brother, Landon Bruce, was also detained after allegedly running from deputies and being tracked down by police dog Duke. The arrests followed an investigation into a series of vehicle thefts in and around Renton, Washington. The brothers are accused of targeting Ford trucks as well as a U-Haul vehicle. Deputies used K-9 Duke to help locate Landon after he tried…
Former Carlton president Luke Sayers has settled a bitter defamation dispute with his ex-wife, Cate, issuing an unreserved apology for the “extreme hurt and harm” caused to the mother of their four daughters. The confidential agreement, reached at the eleventh hour in the Supreme Court of Victoria, brings an end to proceedings over Sayers’ handling of a scandal involving an explicit photograph posted from his X account. Lawyers for the former couple told the court on Friday that the case had been resolved, avoiding a trial that was expected to examine the conduct of senior AFL figures and the league’s…
Twenty-five years after Adam J. Lewis was killed in the World Trade Centre attacks, the Bridgeport school founded in his memory has grown from a 12-child preschool into an academy serving nearly 200 pupils from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. Each September, Lewis’s widow, Patty, welcomes pupils to Adam J. Lewis Academy with a soundtrack of 1980s music. The school was created to extend to children in Bridgeport the same life-changing educational opportunity that helped transform her husband’s own future. Lewis grew up in a one-bedroom flat in the Bronx with his father before winning a sports scholarship to Manhattan’s prestigious…
Australian workers have been reminded that being placed on a roster does not automatically mean they can be compelled to work on a public holiday, following a legal dispute involving mining giant BHP. Under Australia’s National Employment Standards, employees are entitled to be absent on a public holiday. An employer may ask them to work, but the request must be reasonable and workers may refuse if their refusal is also reasonable. Public holiday work must be requested, not imposed The issue came under scrutiny after 85 workers at BHP’s Daunia coal mine in central Queensland were required to work on…
Australian influencer Matilda Baxter has drawn fresh concern after posting a video showing her partner apparently able to wrap both hands around her dramatically narrowed waist following controversial “Barbie waist” surgery. The 23-year-old, who is based in Adelaide and is known online as Tilds Search, appeared in a black compression corset and bright orange cut-out dress in the Instagram clip. “Guys, waist is non-existent. I am a Barbie Doll,” Baxter said as her partner placed his hands around her middle. The procedure, known as rib contouring or rib remodelling, involves weakening and fracturing the lower ribs before repositioning them inwards…
A Fort Bend County woman lost $50,000 after fraudsters posing as sheriff’s deputies convinced her she had missed federal jury duty and was facing arrest. The school worker, who has not been named, received a call that appeared to come from the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office. The caller knew personal details including her address, date of birth and Social Security number, and warned that a warrant had been issued for her arrest. She was told to find somewhere private and remain on the phone while the supposed investigation took place. The scammers then sent messages containing fake arrest warrants,…
Australian shares fell sharply on Friday as crude prices climbed to their highest level since May, with the continuing war between the United States and Iran raising fresh concerns about global energy supplies and inflation. The S&P/ASX 200 dropped 91.1 points, or 1 per cent, to 8,728.3 in early trading, after losing a similar amount on Thursday. The Australian dollar slipped to US71.56 cents. The index fell 0.6 per cent, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 316 points and the…
Republican congressman Rob Bresnahan is campaigning on a bill to give Pennsylvania communities greater control over data centre developments while holding investments in companies that stand to benefit from the industry’s expansion. The issue is central to a new television advert running in the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre area, where Bresnahan is seeking re-election. In the advert, he presents himself as a defender of local decision-making against large technology companies seeking to build facilities in north-eastern Pennsylvania. “Northeastern Pennsylvania is our land and our home, but to big data, we’re just land and dollar signs,” Bresnahan says in the advert. He…
