Donald Trump has said he does not believe Congress would need to approve his proposed $5,000 “Trump Dividend” for American adults, despite the plan potentially costing more than $1 trillion. In an interview with CBS News Texas political reporter Jack Fink in Arlington, the US president said the payments would follow Republican victories in both chambers of Congress at the midterm elections. “We think not,” Mr Trump said when asked whether congressional approval would be required. He added that lawmakers would support the plan if approval was needed. Mr Trump claimed the money could be funded by revenue from tariffs…
The Dorchester has secured permission to sell a Qatari royal’s limited-edition Fiat after winning a judgment over an unpaid bill of almost £458,000. Sheikh Nasser bin Abdullah al-Thani was sued by the five-star Mayfair hotel over outstanding room charges, additional costs and interest. The Central London County Court ruled in the hotel’s favour in July, according to court documents reported by the Financial Times. Anti-Muslim rhetoric is gaining a more prominent foothold in Republican politics ahead of November’s US midterm elections, with attacks on Islam appearing in congressional campaigning, policy proposals and messages from candidates seeking support on the campaign trail. The trend has been most visibly represented by the Sharia-Free America Caucus, a group founded in December by Texas Republicans Chip Roy and Keith Self. The caucus said in March that it had grown to 60 members from 25 states, underlining the reach of a movement that began with two lawmakers. Its members argue that Islamic religious law poses a threat to the…
Wall Street shares fell on Thursday as stronger-than-expected producer price data, rising Treasury yields and a sharp jump in oil prices revived fears that inflation could keep interest rates higher for longer. The S&P 500 dropped 0.59 per cent to 7,591.55, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped by the same margin to 26,098.40. Nine of the benchmark’s 11 sectors ended lower, led by falls in materials and technology stocks. US producer prices rose 5.4 per cent in the year to August, ahead of economists’ expectations for a 5.3 per cent increase, according to data from the Labor Department. Prices increased by…
Surfshark has disclosed a data breach involving an internally used test environment that was mistakenly exposed to the internet, allowing an unauthorised party to access server configurations and build-related credentials. The VPN provider said the incident was contained within its testing infrastructure and did not affect customers, its production VPN systems or personal data. The exposed environment included a server used by Surfshark’s engineering teams, along with portions of system binaries and code history. A separate machine used to optimise access to online content was also accessed and operated as a proxy. Surfshark said the proxy server did not contain…

Saturday will bring a noticeable change, with partly sunny skies, temperatures reaching 83F and more humid conditions. At least 24 schoolchildren have been killed in a fire that swept through two schools and about 300 wooden homes in Bukavu, a rebel-held city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The dead included 19 girls and five boys, according to Dunia Masumbuko Bwenge, vice-governor of South Kivu province in the administration appointed by the Rwanda-backed AFC/M23 movement. A further 29 people were injured, with 21 being treated in intensive care, the rebel administration said. The death toll is expected to rise as emergency workers continue to search the wreckage. The blaze began at a house in a densely…
Anthropic has blocked scientists who used its Claude artificial intelligence models in ways that could have supported the development of biological weapons, the company has said. The cases are among five detailed in a new threat intelligence report covering activity disrupted between December 2025 and August 2026. Anthropic said the examples demonstrated potential capability, but did not prove that any of the researchers intended to create biological weapons or that such weapons were developed. ([anthropic.com](https://www.anthropic.com/threat-intelligence-report-september-2026)) The company has not identified the scientists, describing them as working researchers whose motives it could not establish. Their accounts were banned after investigations, with…
A 27-year-old woman has been jailed for four years and six months after driving a speeding Audi on to a Birmingham pavement and killing pedestrian Maurice Middleton. Shanise Hussain was travelling at 48mph in a 30mph zone on Great Hampton Street on 21 July 2024 when she lost control of her Audi A3, West Midlands Police said. She swerved around another vehicle before accelerating on to the wrong side of the road. The Audi struck a central reservation and then collided with two pedestrians. Mr Middleton, who was 68, died at the scene. The second pedestrian suffered minor injuries to…
The US Treasury bought back $5.187 billion (£4 billion) of government bonds on Thursday, 10 September, in an expanded operation aimed at supporting liquidity in the market for longer-dated debt. The purchase covered Treasury securities maturing in 10 to 20 years and attracted offers worth $10.489 billion, according to the results of the operation. The Treasury had announced that it would buy up to $6 billion of bonds in the latest transaction, three times the maximum amount offered in its previous operation in the same maturity range. The move forms part of a broader bond buyback programme designed to improve…
