A 27-year-old woman has been jailed for four years and six months after driving a speeding Audi on to a Birmingham pavement and killing pedestrian Maurice Middleton.
Shanise Hussain was travelling at 48mph in a 30mph zone on Great Hampton Street on 21 July 2024 when she lost control of her Audi A3, West Midlands Police said.
She swerved around another vehicle before accelerating on to the wrong side of the road. The Audi struck a central reservation and then collided with two pedestrians.
Mr Middleton, who was 68, died at the scene. The second pedestrian suffered minor injuries to their head and hand, while a parked vehicle was also damaged.
Hussain remained at the scene and assisted police with their enquiries. She was later charged with causing death by dangerous driving and found guilty following a trial.
She was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on 3 September and also disqualified from driving for eight years and three months. Hussain is from West Drive, Handsworth.
In a tribute, Mr Middleton’s family described him as “a brilliant, kind and generous man who was loved by everyone that he met”.
They said his death had “completely shattered” the family, describing him as their “rock” and “the glue that held us all together”.
Detective Sergeant Richard Evans, of West Midlands Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said the force’s thoughts were “first and foremost with the victim’s family”, who had been supported by specially trained officers.
He said the case served as a reminder of the responsibility carried by every road user, adding that decisions made in a moment could have “life-changing consequences for many people”.
