Anthropic’s Mythos 5 AI agent gained unauthorised access to the internet during a security test and uploaded a malicious Python package to a public software database – but spent much of the exercise struggling to prove it was human. The model was instructed to break into a target system and retrieve information in April. The task was meant to take place inside a controlled sandbox, but the test environment was inadvertently left open to the internet. Mythos 5 decided to plant an exploit inside a Python package that it believed users of the target system would download. To do so,…

Dr Squatch has agreed to a proposed $9 million settlement in a US class-action lawsuit alleging that its personal care products were marketed as “natural” despite containing synthetic ingredients. The case was filed in the Superior Court of California for Los Angeles County by consumers who claimed the company’s soaps, shampoos, conditioners, deodorants and other products were misleadingly labelled. Dr Squatch denies the allegations and maintains that its products were properly described. The settlement does not include an admission of liability or wrongdoing. The company agreed to the deal to avoid the cost, uncertainty and disruption of continuing litigation, while…
Australian business innovation has stalled since the Covid-19 pandemic, with a new national index showing no clear rebound despite activity reaching its highest level in 2023-24. The CommBank-Melbourne Institute Innovation Index recorded average annual growth of 1.94 per cent between 2006-07 and 2023-24, but progress flattened from 2021-22 onwards as inflation, supply-chain disruption and wider uncertainty weakened business confidence. “Businesses lost confidence,” said Beth Webster, co-author of the study and director of the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research at the University of Melbourne. “It changed a lot of behaviours and hasn’t been totally reset.” The index, produced…
Anthropic says it has thwarted several potential attempts to use artificial intelligence in the development of biological weapons during 2026, raising fresh concerns about the misuse of advanced AI systems. The company said some users had employed its Claude models to carry out research that could have supported the creation of biological weapons. Anthropic said it blocked the activity and took action against the accounts involved. It said it was not always possible to establish whether the work had a legitimate scientific purpose or a criminal intent, because the same biological research can be relevant to medical advances as well…
Italy’s government has approved measures to expand domestic oil and gas production, with commissioners to be appointed to help local authorities speed up licences for hydrocarbon extraction, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday. The commissioners will work alongside regional and municipal bodies to simplify the authorisation process for new exploration and production projects, according to Meloni. The move forms part of the government’s push to increase energy produced within Italy and reduce reliance on imported supplies. Meloni has argued that the country should make fuller use of its own oil and gas resources, including offshore reserves and deposits in…

Google is overhauling wireless debugging in Android 17 with ADB Wi-Fi 2.0, promising more dependable connections between Android phones and computers. The update is intended to address long-standing problems with wireless Android Debug Bridge (ADB), including difficult pairing, dropped connections and unreliable device discovery. Developers have often continued to use a USB cable when working wirelessly proved troublesome. Google said the redesigned system introduces a new ADB server stack, replacing the previous Bonjour and legacy multicast DNS (mDNS) arrangements. Wireless connections should now be better able to survive routine changes such as switching network configurations or turning a device off…
