Arsenal’s reported interest in Julián Álvarez has been dismissed by Steve McManaman, who believes the Atlético Madrid forward was never seriously considering a move to north London. The Argentina international was linked with Mikel Arteta’s side during the summer, as Arsenal explored attacking reinforcements after a transfer window in which Christos Tzolis was their only new option for the front three. Arsenal’s Julián Álvarez links questioned McManaman, speaking during TNT Sports’ Champions League coverage, argued that Álvarez’s preference was always to join Barcelona rather than Arsenal. “He was never going to go, as if he wants to go to Arsenal,”…
A man has been taken into custody after allegedly stabbing a 21-year-old during a fight in Chicago’s Loop early on Thursday morning. Chicago police said officers were called to the area of Lake and Dearborn streets at about 1.30am, where the victim had suffered a slash to the chest from a “sharp object”. He was taken to Northwestern Hospital and was reported to be in good condition. The suspected attacker was detained at the scene, where police said a weapon was recovered. No charges had been announced and the investigation remained ongoing. Detectives from Area Three were leading the inquiry.

The backlog of immigration appeals waiting to be heard has risen sharply, with more than 150,000 cases now before the First-tier Tribunal Immigration and Asylum Chamber. Official figures show the chamber’s outstanding caseload increased by 68 per cent to 152,000 in the year to March 2026. Appeals relating to asylum and protection accounted for more than half of all cases lodged. The rise follows a surge in refusals as the Home Office continued its programme to clear older asylum claims. The Ministry of Justice said receipts at the tribunal increased by 49 per cent during 2025/26, reaching 118,000, while the…
Ultra-wealthy investors and family offices are returning to oil and gas assets as the war involving Iran and the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence sharpen concerns about energy security and demand. The renewed interest is being felt across mineral rights, producing fields and energy infrastructure, although advisers say rising competition from institutional investors and private-equity firms is making attractive deals increasingly difficult to find. Oil and gas deal spending reached a two-year high during the first half of 2026, according to Wood Mackenzie. Gas production accounted for much of the increase, with spending exceeding $32 billion — its highest level…
Claudia Winkleman is in talks to front a revival of Hell’s Kitchen for ITV, in a move that could take the presenter away from the BBC for the first time in 17 years. The reported discussions are understood to be at an early stage, with Winkleman said to be at the top of producers’ list to host the cookery competition. Insiders told The Sun that ITV was prepared to work around her existing commitments in an effort to secure her. Winkleman, 54, last presented for ITV when she took over Hell’s Kitchen for its fourth and final UK series in…
European start-up founders and venture capitalists have urged lawmakers not to dilute plans for an EU-wide company structure, warning that weakening its key provisions could make the proposed EU Inc framework unusable. In an open letter, prominent figures from the bloc’s technology sector called on the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union to preserve the central elements of the proposal as negotiations over the final legislation continue. EU Inc is intended to create a common company statute that would allow businesses to incorporate under one framework and operate more easily across member states. Supporters see it as…
