Donald Trump has promised a $5,000 “dividend” for every adult US citizen if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress in November’s midterm elections. The president made the pledge during a speech at the Republican National Committee’s first midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday, presenting the payment as a reward for voters who keep the Republican Party in power. “If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them … because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America…
A Dallas driver has criticised the police response after a white Mercedes SUV hit her vehicle and left the scene of a hit-and-run, despite footage capturing the collision. The crash happened on Monday, September 7, at the junction of South M Wright Freeway and Al Lipscomb Way in Dallas. Dashboard cameras in the driver’s vehicle recorded the Mercedes striking her from behind. The impact detached the Mercedes’s bumper. The SUV is then seen driving away about 20 seconds later, leaving the damaged bumper behind. The driver said she called 911 immediately but was told Dallas Police would not send an…
Australian Liberal frontbencher Andrew Hastie has escalated his attack on One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, accusing her of hiding behind satire after a party cartoon repeatedly labelled him a “traitor”. The former special forces soldier called Ms Hanson and One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce “lying cowards” and challenged them to either stand by the accusation or remove the video, which remains pinned to Ms Hanson’s X account. The animated clip, titled Don’t be Hastie, refers to Mr Hastie’s evidence in the defamation case brought by decorated former soldier Ben Roberts-Smith. It uses the word “traitor” eight times and also describes…
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen made a rare joint appearance in New York on Tuesday, 8 September, as the fashion world gathered for New York Fashion Week. The 40-year-old twins, who now run the luxury label The Row, were seen during a low-key outing ahead of the shows. Their brand is not scheduled to present a collection in New York this season. Mary-Kate wore a flowing black top with relaxed-fit jeans and strappy leather sandals, while Ashley opted for a white T-shirt, loose black shorts and a jumper draped around her neck. Both wore sunglasses and had their brunette hair parted…
The Bank of Japan may have to raise interest rates rapidly if inflation accelerates, board member Kazuyuki Masu has warned, as the central bank faces mounting pressure from higher producer prices, a weaker yen and rising energy costs. Speaking to business leaders in Fukui on Thursday, Mr Masu said financial conditions remained accommodative and that the BOJ should continue moving its policy rate towards a level considered neutral for the economy. “If inflation accelerates here, there is a risk we might inevitably need to rapidly raise interest rates,” he said. Mr Masu said a recent increase in producer prices deserved…
Sharon Stone has revealed she has been celibate for “quite a while”, saying she is no longer interested in casual relationships and wants a companion rather than someone simply seeking sex. The Basic Instinct star made the admission during an appearance on Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown podcast, where she also said she did not believe she had yet experienced the great love of her life. Stone, who has been married twice, said she had enjoyed both good and bad relationships but had been single for a considerable period. “I’m a really good girlfriend, but I haven’t been a girlfriend in a…
Firefighters were tackling a major blaze at the Lochmoor Club in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, after smoke was seen pouring from the roof of the private country club on Wednesday afternoon. Crews were called to the club on Sunningdale Drive shortly before 3pm after a fire was reported in the ceiling, according to Grosse Pointe Woods director of public safety John Kosanke. Flames later broke through the roof as the fire intensified. A resident who lives three homes from the golf course said he watched emergency crews arrive and saw the blaze spread through the building. The resident and others…
Journalist and author Peter FitzSimons has appeared as a witness in the criminal trial of former Australian broadcaster Alan Jones, giving evidence about a 2019 conversation with a former staff member who later accused Jones of unwanted kissing and touching. FitzSimons, a columnist for The Sydney Morning Herald, was contacted by Ray Hadley, Jones’s former 2GB colleague and long-time radio rival. The complainant, known in court as “C”, spoke to FitzSimons by telephone but did not reveal his identity. The court heard that FitzSimons was investigating allegations concerning Jones at the time. “C” did not agree to be named or…
Barry Melrose, the former Los Angeles Kings coach who guided Wayne Gretzky’s team to the 1993 Stanley Cup Final before becoming one of hockey’s best-known television analysts, has died aged 70. ESPN announced his death on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after being informed by his wife. Melrose had stepped away from broadcasting in 2023 after revealing that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Tributes were led by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, who said Melrose’s distinctive appearance and infectious enthusiasm had made him an unmistakable figure in the sport. “From the flowing locks of his distinctive mullet to the flared…
Grace Tame has apologised after appearing to dismiss allegations of sexual violence during Hamas’s October 7 attacks on Israel as “propaganda” and “debunked”, while insisting her remarks were misinterpreted. The former Australian of the Year said she stood with survivors of sexual violence “everywhere” and did not deny allegations made by individual Israeli women, including claims of gang rape. In an Instagram video posted on Thursday, Ms Tame said comments made during a March interview with ABC Radio Sydney had been understood to mean she disbelieved Israeli survivors. “This is not the case,” she said. “I always have, and always…
