Chelsea are interested in a deal for Philadelphia Union forward Malik Jakupovic, but face competition from several European clubs for the highly rated 17-year-old.
The teenager has attracted attention following his progress in Major League Soccer, with Borussia Dortmund understood to have already made attempts to sign him. RB Salzburg, VfB Stuttgart and Monaco are also monitoring his situation.
Chelsea face competition for Malik Jakupovic
Jakupovic, who stands at 6ft 3in, is regarded as one of the most promising young attacking players in American football. His physical presence is matched by his technical ability, and he has begun to make an impression at senior level.
A report by TEAMtalk said Chelsea had entered the race for the forward, who could represent a long-term investment for the Stamford Bridge club. His continued development is understood to have made him an attractive prospect.
Dortmund reportedly offered up to €3 million for Jakupovic during the summer transfer window, but Philadelphia Union rejected the proposals. The Bundesliga side remain determined to reach an agreement.
Philadelphia Union are in a strong negotiating position after securing Jakupovic on a contract running until 2030, with an option to extend it for a further season. The MLS club are understood to want a fee in the double-digit millions before considering a sale.
That valuation could make a transfer more difficult, particularly after Dortmund’s previous offers failed to lead to an agreement. Chelsea have yet to make a formal offer, and it remains unclear whether they will do so in the coming months.
Jakupovic has already scored his first professional goal and has also enhanced his reputation at international level. He has scored 12 times in nine appearances for the United States Under-17 side.
