The United States is to ban imports of a range of Canadian alcoholic drinks, motorcycles and dairy-related products from 29 September, escalating a trade war between the two North American neighbours. The restrictions were announced by President Donald Trump after Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion (£15.1 billion) of US goods, including steel, dairy and agricultural equipment. The White House said the new measures were authorised under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which allows the president to impose duties or exclude imports where foreign trade practices are judged to discriminate against US commerce. Augusta Abalones ended a 30-year wait for an Onshore Cup premiership with a tense two-point victory over Busselton Bombers in Saturday’s grand final. Apple has unveiled its first foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, in the first major product launch led by new chief executive John Ternus. The device, called the iPhone Duo, was revealed at Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California. It has the largest display ever fitted to an Apple phone and folds to roughly the size of a passport. Apple said the inner screen is 80 per cent larger than that of its next-largest iPhone and supports the Apple Pencil, marking the company’s entry into a smartphone…
An abandoned puppy found in a crate at a Medina County rest area has been given a new home by a sheriff’s deputy after an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper came to his rescue. Trooper John Kronander discovered the dog during a routine check on August 23. The puppy had been left inside a crate covered with cardboard, without food or water. Body-camera footage shows Kronander opening the crate and reassuring the animal before it began playing with him. The energetic puppy pawed at a bottle and appeared eager to leave with the trooper. Kronander took the dog to the…
Andrew and Tristan Tate have been refused bail by a US judge and will remain in custody in Miami while they fight extradition to the UK over allegations including rape and human trafficking. US Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis rejected the brothers’ application on Wednesday, ruling that they had not shown they were neither a flight risk nor a danger to the community. She also found that they had failed to establish the “special circumstances” required for bail in an international extradition case. The decision means the pair will stay at the Federal Detention Center in Miami, where they have been…
Oil prices have climbed back above $100 a barrel for the first time since July as attacks on energy facilities and shipping in the Middle East put further pressure on already strained global supplies. Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose by almost 3% to $100.72 early on Wednesday. US crude also increased, gaining 2.4% to $95.25 a barrel. The latest surge has been accompanied by sharp increases in fuel costs in the United States. The average price of regular petrol rose by seven cents overnight to $4.22 a US gallon, according to the motoring organisation AAA — more than $1…
Strictly Come Dancing’s new presenting trio have admitted the BBC show’s on-screen format is still being shaped, with Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe and Johannes Radebe preparing to share hosting duties for the first time in the programme’s history. The presenters, who are taking over from Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, said producers deliberately chose a “wild card” approach after discovering the chemistry between them during an unusually secretive audition process. “There’s no like for like, so no one’s kind of replacing anybody and at the minute it’s all very kind of open,” Willis told Richard Osman on The Rest Is…
Apple’s new chief executive, John Ternus, has signalled that the iPhone will remain at the centre of the company’s AI strategy, arguing that no new category of hardware is needed to make artificial intelligence a daily consumer tool. Speaking at Apple’s Surprise and Shine event in Cupertino, California, Mr Ternus said the iPhone already combines the features required for what he described as an “intelligent personal hub”. He said the ideal device would understand a user’s personal context, remain with them throughout the day and combine a powerful processor for running AI models with an internet connection to cloud-based services.…
