US investigators subjected about 50 members of the Pentagon’s Joint Staff to polygraph tests in August as part of an expanded hunt for leaks about the war with Iran and dwindling American weapons stocks. The examinations targeted military officers and civilian employees who were questioned about whether they had disclosed classified information to journalists, including reports that supplies of long-range missiles and Patriot interceptors had been sharply reduced. The scale and seniority of the operation appear to be highly unusual. Retired Rear Admiral Donald Guter, a former Navy judge advocate general, said he had never seen polygraph testing used so…

Suella Braverman has said a Reform UK government would require schools to fly the Union flag and have pupils sing the national anthem, arguing that children should be shown what patriotism means. Reform’s education spokesman made the proposal while addressing the party’s conference at the NEC in Birmingham on Saturday. She said there was a need to show young people “what patriotism looks like”, as the party set out plans to place national identity at the centre of its education agenda. The proposal would make patriotic observances a routine part of school life, rather than leaving individual schools to decide…

US military prosecutors will not appeal a ruling that excluded a key confession by Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11 attacks, in a decision intended to keep his long-delayed trial on course for June 2028. The prosecution notified victims’ families of the decision on Friday, September 4, one week before the 25th anniversary of the attacks, which killed almost 3,000 people in New York, at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. The statements were made to FBI agents during four days of questioning at Guantánamo Bay in January 2007. Prosecutors had argued that the interviews were voluntary…

Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s proposal to cancel part of France’s national debt has been rejected by Germany’s central bank chief, who warned that the plan would breach European treaties and risk fuelling hyperinflation. Joachim Nagel, president of the Bundesbank and a member of the European Central Bank’s governing council, said no central bank in the eurozone could write off government debt held on its balance sheet. “No central bank in the Eurosystem nor the ECB is allowed to cancel national debt,” Mr Nagel told Le Monde. “This would constitute monetary financing of government, which is prohibited under the European treaties.” The intervention…

Enzo Fernandez made an impressive Manchester City debut as an unexpected starter in Saturday’s 1-0 Premier League victory over Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium. The £125m signing had been named among the substitutes after completing his move from Chelsea earlier in the week. However, a back problem suffered by Nico O’Reilly during the warm-up forced manager Enzo Maresca to bring the Argentina international into the starting line-up. Fernandez quickly made an impact, helping to launch the move which led to Erling Haaland’s winning goal in the 26th minute. His involvement in midfield gave City greater control and helped them…
