Tottenham have no intention of selling Lucas Bergvall despite renewed interest from Barcelona and Napoli, with the Swedish midfielder still regarded as a key part of the club’s long-term plans.
Bergvall, 20, has made only four Premier League appearances during a stop-start season under Roberto De Zerbi. However, Tottenham remain convinced that he can develop into a regular starter.
Barcelona continue to monitor Lucas Bergvall
Barcelona are monitoring Bergvall again after missing out on the midfielder in 2024, while Napoli are also understood to be tracking his situation.
Tottenham’s position has been strengthened by the player’s contract, which runs until 2031. The club also believe Bergvall is now happier in north London than he was during the summer, when concerns over limited playing time led him to consider leaving.
De Zerbi ultimately persuaded Bergvall to remain at Tottenham, and the club’s confidence in his potential was underlined when he signed a new long-term agreement in September.
Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange said: “Lucas is an outstanding young player with enormous potential and we are delighted that he has committed his future to the Club.”
Barcelona’s interest reflects Bergvall’s technical quality, athleticism and versatility, but Spurs currently hold a strong negotiating position and have little reason to sanction a sale.
The immediate issue for Tottenham is ensuring that Bergvall receives a clearer route into the team. If his appearances remain limited, interest from Barcelona and Napoli is likely to persist despite the length of his contract.
For now, however, Tottenham’s preference is to retain the midfielder and support his development rather than allow a promising young player to leave before reaching his potential.
