Manchester United’s interest in Unai Emery faces a significant setback, with the Aston Villa manager in advanced talks over a new long-term contract.
Emery has been considered as a possible replacement for Michael Carrick, whose position remains uncertain despite United’s dramatic 3-2 Champions League comeback against Roma on Tuesday.
The victory eased some of the pressure on Carrick, but it followed a nine-match winless run and may only have delayed questions over his future.
Unai Emery in advanced talks over Aston Villa contract
Villa are understood to be negotiating an agreement intended, in part, to end speculation over Emery’s availability. The Spaniard held talks with chairman Nassef Sawiris on Wednesday, after which the club confirmed discussions about a long-term project extending beyond 2029.
Emery has overseen a major transformation at Villa since arriving in 2022. During his tenure, the club have won the Europa League and reached the Champions League on two occasions.
His possible availability had made him a credible option for United, although reports suggested Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann were regarded as stronger immediate candidates if Carrick were to leave.
Emery has previously indicated that he feels “comfortable” at Villa, while reports have also suggested he remains committed to the project at Villa Park despite the interest from Old Trafford.
Any new agreement could further narrow Manchester United’s managerial shortlist. Emery’s reported desire for substantial control over football operations could also have been a consideration given the club’s current structure under Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
The timing will add interest to the situation, with United due to host Aston Villa on 8 November. Emery could therefore visit Old Trafford shortly after making his long-term commitment to the Premier League club clearer.
United must now continue to assess their options, with Howe and Nagelsmann potentially taking on greater importance if Carrick’s win over Roma does not secure his position.
