Coby Black marked his NRL debut with a double as the Canberra Raiders’ young halfback made an immediate impact against the North Queensland Cowboys on Saturday.
The 20-year-old, who joined Canberra from Brisbane on a three-year deal, was handed the No.7 jersey after Ethan Sanders was rested for the Raiders’ final regular-season match.
Black also combined effectively with five-eighth Ethan Strange, supporting his fellow half to score another try in a promising display from Canberra’s emerging halves pairing.
Black had impressed in the NSW Cup during his first season with the Raiders, registering nine tries and 17 try assists in 19 appearances before being given his long-awaited opportunity at NRL level.
Raiders coach Ricky Stuart had said the debut was part of the club’s preparations for next season, with Black and fellow debutant Malachi Smith among those selected to gain top-flight experience.
