A British woman who moved to Nigeria to build a new life with her husband has died from septic shock while 37 weeks pregnant, after her unborn daughter died in the womb.
Claire Chadwick, 40, was expecting a baby girl with her husband, Ibrahim. Her family have launched a fundraising appeal to raise £10,000 to bring the mother and child roughly 3,000 miles back to the UK.
Claire and Ibrahim had built a following on social media by sharing videos about their relationship, faith and food challenges on TikTok and Instagram.
Her sister Shannon said the family’s priority was to see them both returned home and laid to rest together.
“More than anything, we want them both returned so they can be laid to rest with dignity, surrounded by the family who love them,” she said.
Claire leaves behind a 19-year-old son in Wales, as well as her husband and wider family. Shannon described her as a woman who lived life in her own way and said she would leave a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
The response to the fundraiser has been described as overwhelming. The family also thanked REST, a charity supporting relatives of people who die suddenly or tragically abroad.
Tributes posted in support of the appeal described Claire as “lovely”, “kind” and caring.
One person wrote: “I remember Claire from when we were little and went dancing together. My mum actually has a few pictures of us all somewhere. Rest in peace, lovely.”
Another said: “I’m so devastated; she was such a kind and caring woman,” while a further tribute described Claire as “such a beautiful girl” who “always made people laugh”.
