Nicolas Jackson’s strong start at Aston Villa has raised questions over Chelsea’s decision to allow the forward to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
The 25-year-old has scored five goals in eight Premier League appearances for Unai Emery’s side, making him Villa’s leading scorer in the competition. His goals account for half of the club’s league total so far.
Jackson has also scored in consecutive league matches, suggesting that the former Chelsea striker is gaining momentum after moving to Villa in a deal reportedly worth £65 million, including add-ons.
Nicolas Jackson finding his form at Aston Villa
The Senegal international struggled to win over everyone during his time in west London, but has quickly become a more influential attacking player at Villa. His pace, movement and finishing have made him a consistent threat in the final third.
His previous relationship with Emery could be helping his progress. Jackson worked with the Villa manager at Villarreal, and that familiarity may have played a part in the forward’s improved performances.
With Jackson now contributing so regularly in front of goal, Chelsea may come to regret their decision to sanction his departure, particularly if his current form continues throughout the campaign.
Manchester United will also need to be alert when they face Aston Villa. Ruben Amorim’s side have conceded 15 goals in nine league matches and have yet to keep a clean sheet, leaving Jackson with an opportunity to expose their defensive weaknesses.
For Chelsea, the forward’s emergence at Villa represents an uncomfortable reminder of the attacking talent they chose to let go during the summer.
