A magnitude 3.5 earthquake near Appin, south of Campbelltown, shook Sydney’s south-west shortly after 6am on Sunday.
Geoscience Australia said the earthquake originated 2km below the surface, near the Nattai National Park. Almost 250 people lodged “felt reports” with the agency.
Residents in nearby communities described being jolted awake by the tremor. One Douglas Park resident said it “felt like a car hit my house”.
Another local said: “Thought a truck ran into our house. The house shook.”
A resident in Wilton said the earthquake “woke us up, freaked out at what was going on”.
