Manchester United are considering a January move for Roma right-back Wesley as Michael Carrick seeks to strengthen a defence affected by Diogo Dalot’s inconsistent form.
The 23-year-old Brazilian has emerged as a potential target after impressing in Serie A this season. Wesley has provided three assists in nine league appearances, with his attacking output and ability to play at right-back understood to have attracted United’s attention.
United’s recruitment plans have reportedly accelerated after the club opted against making major defensive additions during the summer transfer window. Dalot has remained a regular under Carrick, but his performances have led to concern over his long-term position at Old Trafford.
Manchester United assess Wesley as Dalot competition
Dalot, who joined United from Porto in 2018, has made more than 250 appearances for the club. The 27-year-old is determined to compete for his place, although a new arrival would increase the pressure on him and provide Carrick with another option on the right.
United have experienced defensive difficulties throughout the campaign and believe fresh personnel could help bring greater stability. Wesley’s versatility and contribution going forward are seen as qualities that could suit the club’s requirements.
However, a deal may prove difficult to complete. Wesley has attracted interest from other European clubs and remains under contract with Roma until 2030, leaving the Italian side in a strong negotiating position.
United have yet to make a formal approach, but strengthening their defensive options is becoming an increasingly important part of the club’s plans for the January transfer window.
