eBay is to cut about 1,000 jobs, or roughly 9% of its workforce, as the online marketplace streamlines its operations and concentrates on its fastest-growing areas.
The company said the reductions were intended to align its teams and resources with its main strategic priorities. It added that it would continue hiring in “priority areas aligned with our strategy”.
“As we work to capture the significant opportunity ahead, this step was taken to ensure we continue to operate from a position of strength by aligning our teams and resources with our top strategic priorities,” an eBay spokesperson said.
The latest eBay layoffs are the second round of job cuts announced by the company this year. A 6% workforce reduction in February affected about 800 employees.
eBay had roughly 12,300 employees at the end of 2025. The company has been reducing its headcount in recent years while increasing its spending on artificial intelligence.
Chief executive Jamie Iannone told staff that “our strategy is working”, adding that continued growth required the company to make “thoughtful choices about where we focus and invest”.
The cuts come after eBay completed its acquisition of used clothing resale platform Depop from Etsy in July. The deal, worth $1.4 billion, added a brand with a strong customer base among Gen Z and millennial users.
Shares in eBay rose by about 1% on Wednesday morning.
