More than $2,500 has been raised for Kaylub Giamanco, the man who intervened during a school shooting in Bend, Oregon, after a 16-year-old gunman had killed four people.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched on Friday by Amy Reynolds, a businesswoman based in Bend, to support Mr Giamanco and his family following the incident at Silver Rail Elementary School.
Reynolds said the money would help cover trauma-informed therapy and mental health care, possible legal expenses linked to the shooting, lost income and day-to-day costs while Mr Giamanco takes time away from work.
“Kaylub was there for our community in a moment of unimaginable fear. Now it’s our turn to be there for him,” she wrote in the fundraising appeal.
The campaign has a stated target of $18,000. Reynolds said Mr Giamanco had acted out of love but faced a difficult period ahead, with further needs potentially arising.
GoFundMe said it was monitoring developments surrounding the shooting and would hold the money securely while the campaign underwent verification.
Police were called at about 1pm on Thursday after a caller reported that the shooter had fired multiple rounds into his car. Officers arrived within minutes, but Mr Giamanco had already killed the gunman, who was armed with a pump-action shotgun.
