Flemington is expected to remain in good condition for Champions Stakes Day despite overnight rain, further showers and strong winds before the first race.
Track manager Liam O’Keeffe said the surface was likely to be rated a good 4 early in the meeting, with the possibility of improving to a good 3 later in the day.
“I think we will stay a good 4 [track rating] early and maybe a good 3 later on as we have a good wind going across the track which could help dry the surface,” O’Keeffe told Nine.
Rain and wind were affecting Flemington as spectators arrived, with the opening race scheduled for 12.40pm AEDT.
The busy Melbourne Cup carnival has brought a series of races and mixed weather conditions, but O’Keeffe said the track was holding up well.
Racegoers will also be allowed on to the track to watch DJ Fisher perform tonight, although they must wait until about 25 minutes after the final race. The last event is scheduled for 5.50pm.
