Hailey Bieber has posed nude on the cover of ICE Magazine’s Brazil issue, marking a striking change from comments she made in 2021 about never wanting to be photographed without clothes.
The 29-year-old model and Rhode founder shared images from the shoot on Instagram on Tuesday, showing her lying on a beach with the sea behind her as she sipped a can of Brazilian soft drink Guaraná Antarctica.
The third edition of the publication, titled The Brazil Issue, was photographed entirely in Rio de Janeiro by Renell Medrano. It is the magazine’s first international edition and features a wider celebration of Brazilian culture, beaches and fashion. In the cover image, Bieber lies on her stomach on white sand, with a visible bikini tan line and a straw between her teeth. Other photographs show her in colourful swimwear, a sheer top and low-slung athletic shorts.
Bieber’s appearance carries a personal connection to the issue. Her mother, Kennya Deodato, was born in Rio de Janeiro and is the daughter of Brazilian musician and record producer Eumir Deodato.
In an interview accompanying the shoot, Bieber said she trusted Medrano to photograph her in such an exposed setting because of their professional relationship.
“I’m comfortable with her pushing me, photographing me differently, helping me be seen in a different way, because I know she just wants me to be comfortable in myself, too,” she said. The images drew support from Bieber’s celebrity circle, with her husband Justin Bieber among those to like the Instagram post. Kylie Jenner responded with a tongue-out emoji, while Khloé Kardashian wrote “Meoooow”.
Other comments came from Stassie Karanikolaou, who described the pictures as “insane”, and singer and actress Chlöe Bailey, who called them “incredible”.
The shoot is notable in light of a conversation Bieber had with Insecure actor Yvonne Orji on her YouTube channel in 2021, when the pair discussed their Christian faith and the expectations placed on women in the public eye.
Speaking about modelling in lingerie and showing skin, Bieber said at the time that she had reached a point where she “wouldn’t ever want to be shot naked”, while adding that she respected women who felt comfortable doing so.
ICE Magazine said part of the proceeds from each sale would support the Center for Immigrant and Refugee Women in São Paulo, with Bieber agreeing to match its donation in full.
