US mum and influencer Bridget Levine has been mocked online after serving her daughter a first birthday “cake” made from watermelon topped with whipped roasted bone marrow.
Levine, who shares baby food recipes and motherhood advice on Instagram under the handle @bridgetmlevine, revisited a video from January as part of a series promoting nutritious food for children.
In the footage, the 38-year-old cuts a watermelon into a cake-like shape before preparing bone marrow and spreading it over the fruit as icing. She then whips the roasted marrow until it reaches a creamy consistency.
Her daughter appears to enjoy the unusual creation, eating it enthusiastically while Levine looks on.
“I refused to make my baby a birthday cake full of sugar and flour… so I frosted watermelon with BONE MARROW,” she told her followers.
In a further caption, Levine wrote: “I frosted her birthday cake with bone marrow and she devoured it! Roasted and whipped the marrow until it was creamy enough to frost. Simple and it will nourish her growing body.”
Bone marrow is the fatty tissue found inside animal bones and contains fat, protein, vitamins and minerals. Levine presented it as a nutrient-dense alternative to the sugar and flour traditionally used in a birthday cake.
Many viewers were unconvinced, however, and the comments quickly filled with jokes about the unconventional recipe.
“This is a joke right?” one person asked.
Another wrote: “What the actual f**k? Watermelon and whipped bone marrow! This is something you feed a dog, bear or dinosaur.”
“I’m all for healthy, but it’s giving senior dog’s birthday meal vibes,” a third commenter added, while another joked: “I’m so happy my parents didn’t have Internet.”
One critic wrote: “Poor kid. All for nutrition but come on.”
Others defended the US-based mother and praised her effort, with one follower describing the dish as “perfect for a growing baby” and another suggesting she keep it as a family recipe.
