Jane Seymour and Joe Lando have recalled falling in love while filming the CBS drama Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, during a reunion panel at 90s Con in Hartford, Connecticut.
Seymour, 75, played Dr Michaela Quinn in the series, while Lando, 64, portrayed Byron Sully, her character’s love interest. The pair discussed the romance that developed between them away from the cameras during the show’s early days.
Seymour said a flash flood struck while they were filming, prompting Lando to tell her to get into his pick-up truck so they could escape the danger.
“We got out of there and it was like the craziest thing ever,” she recalled.
Afterwards, the actors went out for Mexican food and margaritas. Seymour said it was during that evening that they realised their feelings had become serious.
“And it took us like $5, and then we realized that, you know, we had actually fallen in love,” she said. “So everything you saw on Dr. Quinn, certainly in the pilot [was real].”
The relationship ended not long afterwards, but Seymour and Lando have remained close over the years. They also lived together for a period after Lando’s home was damaged in a fire.
Seymour said they ultimately recognised that Lando wanted a different future, including a family with four children and a younger wife. She already had children at the time and said she would not be able to have more.
Lando has been married to Kristen since 1997, while Seymour is engaged to ER physician John Zambetti. She has four children.
