Leeds United have included Mateo Joseph in their 25-man Premier League squad despite the forward having fallen out of favour with manager Daniel Farke.
Joseph’s inclusion is notable given the breakdown in his relationship with Farke last year. The Spaniard did not return for pre-season training and the Leeds manager subsequently made clear that he was no longer part of his plans.
However, Joseph remained registered with the club after a serious knee injury disrupted his prospects of securing a permanent move during the summer transfer window. He is now recovering under Leeds’ care and is expected to remain at Elland Road at least until January.
The 22-year-old spent last season on loan in Spain, but the spell failed to provide the breakthrough he had hoped for. With his position at Leeds apparently unchanged, the club’s decision to name him in the squad is likely to be viewed as a practical measure rather than a sign that he has been restored to Farke’s first-team plans.
Joseph’s immediate priority is to complete his rehabilitation before deciding on his next move. A permanent departure could be revisited when the January transfer window opens.
Leeds, meanwhile, have started the new Premier League campaign after securing their top-flight status last season and strengthening their squad during the summer. Whether Joseph will have any part to play remains uncertain, but his registration keeps open the possibility of a move once he is fit again.
