Lucas Perri’s difficult start at Torino has prompted questions over Leeds United’s decision to limit his involvement during the second half of last season before sending him to Italy on loan.

Perri’s first competitive appearances have been mixed. He was criticised after Torino’s 1-0 Coppa Italia defeat by Monza on 1 September, a result which ended the club’s involvement in the competition.
He retained his place for the Serie A trip to Fiorentina four days later, but was again blamed for the goal Torino conceded. The visitors eventually recovered to win 2-1, with Perri also producing important saves during the match. Reports in Italy have suggested the goalkeeper’s uncertainty may partly stem from his lack of regular football at Leeds. Perri made 20 appearances for the club in all competitions last season, but was reportedly used less frequently by Daniel Farke during the latter part of the campaign.
That lack of continuity, it has been argued, left Perri short of competitive sharpness before his move to Turin. The goalkeeper had been keen to join Torino and is understood to have rejected other opportunities while waiting for the transfer to be completed.
The move was also influenced by competition for his signature, with Marseille reportedly showing interest as Torino attempted to negotiate more favourable terms with Leeds.
Despite the early criticism, Torino continue to view Perri as their first-choice goalkeeper. His performance against Fiorentina included two notable saves, offering some indication that he can recover from the mistakes that have overshadowed his opening weeks in Italy.
Leeds will monitor his progress closely. A consistent spell in Serie A would strengthen the case for Torino to activate the €16 million option, while also helping Perri rebuild his confidence after an unsettled end to his time at Elland Road.
