Liverpool have no current plans to offer Alexis Mac Allister a new contract, raising the prospect of a major midfield decision next summer despite the Argentina international’s strong form.
The 27-year-old remains an important player under manager Andoni Iraola and is tied to the club until 2028. However, negotiations over an extension have yet to begin, leaving uncertainty over his position as Liverpool look towards 2027.
Liverpool weighing midfield overhaul
Sky Sport Switzerland reports that Liverpool are considering taking their midfield in a different direction next summer and are not currently preparing fresh terms for Mac Allister.
The player’s representatives are understood to be assessing potential opportunities in Spain and Italy, although Mac Allister’s preference is reportedly to remain at Anfield.
The absence of talks was also highlighted in September by Mac Allister’s father and agent, Carlos, who said Liverpool had not contacted the family about an extension. He stressed at the time that his son remained committed to his existing agreement.
Mac Allister has since admitted being “very sad” at not receiving a new contract, but said he would continue to give everything for Liverpool.
Liverpool are said to be relaxed about the situation and in no rush to open negotiations. Real Madrid are monitoring the midfielder, while José Mourinho has reportedly been an admirer.
Mac Allister contract decision carries risk
If the situation remains unresolved, Mac Allister could enter the summer of 2027 with only 12 months left on his deal. Liverpool would then face a choice between extending his contract, selling while his value remains high or risking a weaker negotiating position.
The midfielder’s ability to perform in several roles, alongside his technical quality and intelligence, would make him difficult to replace. Liverpool may still decide that a midfield overhaul is necessary, but allowing his contract to drift could turn a manageable issue into a significant transfer problem.
