Liverpool failed in a late loan bid for Chelsea defender Malo Gusto on transfer deadline day after the clubs could not agree on the structure of a deal.
The Reds are understood to have wanted the 23-year-old France right-back on a temporary basis, but Chelsea were seeking a permanent transfer. The approach, reported by Fabrice Hawkins, therefore ended without agreement.
Liverpool’s proposal did not include a compulsory purchase clause, while Chelsea’s preference was to secure a full-time exit for Gusto. With little time remaining in the window, the two Premier League clubs were unable to bridge that gap.
The move would have given Liverpool additional cover and competition at right-back. Gusto, who joined Chelsea from Lyon in January 2023, remains part of the London club’s first-team squad.
Chelsea’s official review of last season described Gusto as a regular on the right side of the defence. He made 49 appearances, including 38 starts, and was also used at left-back and in midfield.
His versatility had made him an attractive option for Liverpool, but the club were not prepared to meet Chelsea’s terms for a permanent signing. Gusto is now expected to stay at Stamford Bridge beyond the close of the window.
