A 31-year-old man has been critically injured after a Hall County deputy shot him several times during a pursuit and armed confrontation in Lumpkin County, Georgia.
Toby Paul Stoyle, of Royston, was shot on Friday morning after deputies said he drove away from a property near Mincey Mountain Road, nearly striking officers, and later pointed a gun at them following a crash. Hall County sheriff’s deputies, assisted by Lumpkin County officers and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office, had gone to the home at about 10am on November 6 to carry out a probation search linked to a theft investigation.
Stoyle was found sitting in a car at the property, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. When deputies approached, he allegedly drove off, prompting a pursuit that ended after he crashed near Emory Stephens Road, close to the Hall County line.
Investigators said Stoyle got out of the vehicle and pointed a gun at deputies. A Hall County deputy then opened fire, striking him multiple times. Officers gave him first aid at the scene before he was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where he remained in critical condition. A gun was recovered at the crash site, officials said. No officers were injured, and the deputy who fired the shots has been placed on paid administrative leave, in line with department policy.
The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialised Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash, while the GBI is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting at the request of the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office. Once the inquiry is complete, the case file will be sent to the Enotah Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review. The Hall County Sheriff’s Office has not named the deputy involved. Authorities have also not released details of the arrest warrant or said whether any other officers fired their weapons.
