Democrats are preparing to pursue Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor over his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein after winning control of both chambers of the US Congress.
The party is also expected to renew demands for the Department of Justice to release the full, unredacted Epstein files to British police.
Suhas Subramanyam, a member of the House Oversight Committee, said the panel would need to “get creative” to obtain evidence from the former prince, who has so far declined a request to testify.
As a foreign national, Andrew cannot be compelled to appear before the committee. Mr Subramanyam said his refusal had been taken as a sign that he had “something to hide”.
“We’re going to continue to push for information, and if they are in newly released files or testimony we will find out,” he said.
“It’s in Andrew’s best interests to co-operate. If you’re not willing to co-operate with an investigation into the sexual assault and trafficking of underage girls, that is very questionable in my mind.”
Mr Subramanyam said investigators could seek information from “staff, secretaries, other people around Epstein”, adding: “We’ll have to get creative.”
Andrew denies wrongdoing. In 2022, he paid a reported £12 million to Virginia Giuffre, who alleged that Epstein trafficked her to have sex with the former prince three times in 2001, when she was 17. Ms Giuffre took her own life last year.
The Democrats’ midterm victory will give them control of Congress from January for the following two years.
Mr Subramanyam said the committee would also continue pressing the Department of Justice to provide British authorities with the unredacted files needed by Scotland Yard for its stalled investigation into Lord Mandelson.
Lord Mandelson was dismissed as Britain’s ambassador to the US last year after the full extent of his relationship with Epstein became clear.
“We cannot compel the DoJ to release information to UK police. We’re going to keep pushing on that,” Mr Subramanyam said.
If the department continued to refuse, he said Democrats would use their powers to “find information from other sources”.
