A man in his 50s has been taken to hospital after a shark attack at Glenfield Beach, north of Geraldton in Western Australia.
Emergency services were called to the beach at about 9.30am on Monday after the man was reportedly mauled. St John WA paramedics arrived soon afterwards and took him to Geraldton Health Campus about an hour after the initial report.
A shark of unknown species and size was later reported about 40 metres offshore at Drummond Cove Beach, north of the attack site, according to the Western Australian Government’s SharkSmart tracking website.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) said it was investigating a “reported shark incident”.
“DPIRD is working with local authorities and further information will be provided as it becomes available,” the department said.
People in the area have been urged to take additional caution around Glenfield Beach and follow any beach closures.
