Martha Stewart has apologised after her Halloween costume, depicting a homeless person, prompted widespread criticism online.
The US businesswoman, author and television host shared an image of herself wearing worn-out clothing, with what appeared to be dirt on her face and a sign reading: “I am hungry. Help me!”
The post was reportedly part of an Instagram carousel promoting candles sold by Stewart. It was later deleted, although the photograph continued to circulate on Reddit, where users accused her of being out of touch.
Critics also objected to Stewart appearing to make light of the experiences of people living in poverty. One social media user wrote: “We saw the costume. Why do you think poor people who are dying on the side of the road are a costume?”
Another said: “Read the room Martha, people are struggling out here.” Stewart’s estimated net worth has been reported as $US400 million.
Martha Stewart addresses Halloween costume backlash
In a statement, Stewart said the costume had been intended to draw attention to homelessness in America, rather than cause offence.
“I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention,” she said.
“Homelessness continues to remain one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises, something that I care deeply about and I have spent a significant amount of time and effort supporting charities that combat this ongoing social epidemic.”
Stewart added that she was “committed to continuing to make a difference”.
She also described Halloween as one of her favourite holidays, saying she had spent decades teaching others how to celebrate it through recipes, craft ideas and advice on hosting.
