Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut has been hospitalised after suffering a stroke, his office said. He was taken to hospital after developing numbness in his arm while attending his son’s hockey game.
Murphy was later transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring, according to his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt. She said he was “responding well to treatment”.
“The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” Ms Herwitt said in a statement.
The 53-year-old has represented Connecticut in the Senate since 2013, following three terms in the House of Representatives. He has been viewed as a possible contender for the 2028 presidential nomination and has travelled across the US in recent weeks supporting Democrats in the midterm elections.
