Revel Downing, 58, has been identified as one of two experienced aviation enthusiasts killed when a light plane crashed shortly after take-off near Scone in regional New South Wales.
The pair had travelled from Western Australia to inspect and buy the kit-built recreational aircraft, which was worth about $38,000. The second man was aged 63.
Emergency services were called to Bunnan Road, near Scone Racecourse and Scone Aerodrome, shortly before 2pm on Friday after reports that a light plane had come down.
The two men were the only occupants and died at the scene. Fire and Rescue NSW crews remained at the wreckage for several hours after fuel spilled from the destroyed aircraft.
Investigation into Scone plane crash continues
Flight tracking data suggests the aircraft climbed to about 145 metres before rapidly losing speed and altitude. It is believed to have entered an uncontrollable spin before hitting the ground seconds later.
A crime scene was established while specialist investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Recreational Aviation Australia and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau were notified. The ATSB said the aircraft was a kit-built plane operating under Australia’s recreational aviation system, but that it does not investigate accidents involving recreational aircraft.
Investigations into what led to the fatal crash are continuing.
