Four adults were taken to hospital after a lightning strike near the school bus drop-off area at El Mirage Elementary School in Arizona, as severe storms moved through the region.
El Mirage police and firefighters were called to the school shortly after 8.30am on Friday, 30 October, after reports of a lightning strike near the campus.
The four adults were conscious when emergency crews arrived and were taken to a local hospital for further treatment. No children were reported to have been injured.
Officials later said the adults had not been struck directly but had felt the effects of a nearby lightning strike. One woman was reported to have been holding an umbrella and experienced pain in both arms.
The Dysart Unified School District said students and staff were temporarily ordered to shelter in place as a precaution. The order was later lifted and classes continued as normal, although outdoor recess was cancelled and outdoor movement around the campus was limited.
The incident came during a spell of heavy rain and thunderstorms across the Phoenix area, with further severe weather expected in parts of Arizona.
