A 43-year-old Swiss man has been arrested after a shooting at a rave in Aarau left a 22-year-old woman dead and five others injured.
The suspect was detained shortly before 1am on Monday, 31 August, following a major police operation in the northern Swiss canton of Aargau. Police said he was arrested on strong suspicion of involvement in the attack.
Gunfire broke out at about 2.30am on Sunday as the event at the Schachen horse-racing track was ending and partygoers were preparing to leave. Shots were fired at a group of people, according to police information released after the incident.
The woman who died was an Italian national and suffered fatal injuries at the scene. The five injured people were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious.
Aargau police said the injured group comprised four Swiss men and a German woman, aged between 24 and 31. All six victims were residents of Switzerland, although Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni said on Sunday that the woman who was killed and two of those wounded were Italian citizens.
Investigators are still working to establish exactly what happened, the background to the shooting and a possible motive. Police said they currently believe a lone perpetrator was responsible.
Aargau police have asked anyone with information or video footage of the incident to come forward. A further news conference is due to be held at 2pm on Wednesday, 2 September, when officers are expected to provide an update.
