Swanbourne’s community garage sale will return for a second year on November 15, with residents opening their driveways, gardens and verges to bargain hunters from 7am to noon.
Second-hand homewares, toys and clothing will be among the goods on offer as participating households across the suburb join the event.
The sale was started by Swanbourne resident Bridget Robertson, who has lived in the suburb for 22 years. She said the project was intended to bring people together and encourage them to walk between the sales.
“I’ve always done something in volunteering, so this was just a community event to get people out and about and hopefully walking as opposed to driving around the streets,” she said.
Residents can host their own garage sale on the day, with addresses added to a digital map so visitors can plan their route. People attending the sale are also encouraged to register to access the map.
Swanbourne community garage sale aims to grow
Last year’s event included 60 registered garages, with some neighbours joining forces to create larger sales along the streets.
The sales stretched from Walba Way, near The Shorehouse, to the area on the other side of Swanbourne Primary School. Robertson said visitors also stopped at nearby businesses for coffee before exploring the suburb.
“The whole thing is to be community minded and make a fun day,” she said, recalling how children sold homemade brownies and cookies during last year’s event.
Robertson hopes between the same number and 100 garages will take part this year. She said the event could eventually be held every two years, depending on residents’ interest and how much there is to sell.
Registration is open for residents who want their garage address included on the map. The event will be cash-only.
