Texas drivers heading off for Labor Day weekend are facing a sharper rise in fuel costs, with petrol averaging about $3.69 a gallon across the state on Friday, according to AAA.
The price is roughly six cents higher than a week ago and 92 cents above the same point last year. AAA Texas said motorists filling a typical tank could spend around $15 to $20 more than they did for the holiday weekend in 2025.
Diesel has risen even more steeply. The statewide average stood at about $5.46 a gallon, compared with approximately $3.22 a year earlier — an increase of about $2.25.
Where Texas petrol is cheapest
Prices vary considerably across Texas, with the lowest averages generally concentrated in the eastern part of the state.
Tyler was the cheapest of the major metropolitan areas surveyed by AAA, at about $3.55 a gallon. El Paso was the most expensive, with an average close to $3.97.
At county level, Brewster County in western Texas recorded one of the state’s highest averages, at about $4.43 a gallon.
Despite the increase, Texas remains one of the least expensive states in the US for petrol. Its average is about 45 cents below the national figure of $4.14, with only Indiana recording a lower statewide price, according to AAA.
AAA said the national average was the highest ever recorded for the Labor Day period. The motor club attributed the wider rise to continued uncertainty in oil supplies and crude prices around $90 a barrel.
