A mass shooting at an unofficial homecoming block party in Vienna, Georgia, left two men dead and 35 people injured in the early hours of Sunday, October 4.
Gunfire broke out at about 1.25am on Pine Street while deputies from the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office were patrolling a gathering attended by more than 1,000 people, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). Investigation into Vienna mass shooting
Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy said further gunfire was heard about a block away as officers responded, with people scattering in different directions. He told reporters that more than 50 shots had been fired in at least two locations.
“We don’t know if it’s coming at us or someone else,” Mr Peavy said, describing the confusion faced by deputies at the scene. ([apnews.com](https://apnews.com/article/a06a6a7b80a53fa334438d1d7c7473fe?utm_source=openai))
The Dooly County Sheriff’s Office has asked the GBI to assist with the investigation. No suspect has been identified, no arrests have been announced and investigators have not established a motive. Autopsies on the two men killed will be carried out by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office. The gathering took place during homecoming weekend for Dooly County High School but was not organised or sponsored by the school, officials said. Superintendent Sherrod Willaford said additional safety measures and crisis-support teams would be in place when schools opened on Monday.
