Two people have been killed and 35 others injured after gunfire broke out at a crowded block party in Vienna, Georgia, during the early hours of Sunday, October 4, 2026.
Dooly County Sheriff’s Office deputies were patrolling the neighbourhood gathering when shots were fired at about 1.25am near the 900 block of Pine Street. More than 1,000 people were believed to be attending the unofficial homecoming event.
Deputies found several people suffering from gunshot wounds and later discovered two dead men in the 600 block of Pine Street. Dooly County Coroner Brett Walls said the victims were aged 20 and 23, and had died from gunshot injuries. Investigation into Vienna block party shooting
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case at the request of the sheriff’s office. Autopsies on the two men who died will be carried out at the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office.
Sheriff Craig Peavy said people scattered in every direction as the shooting unfolded, with further gunfire reported about a block away while officers were responding.
“Please turn yourself in, because we’re doing everything we can to find out who you are,” Mr Peavy said at a press conference.
Investigators have not announced any arrests, identified a suspect or established a possible motive. They are urging anyone who attended the gathering or witnessed the shooting to contact the GBI’s regional office in Perry.
Special Agent in Charge Jerry Jones said even apparently minor information could prove important to the investigation. The agency has asked witnesses to call (478) 987-4545, while anonymous tips can be submitted through its tip line or online reporting system.
The event coincided with homecoming weekend for Dooly County High School but was not organised or sponsored by the school, according to superintendent Sherrod Willaford. Schools were due to open on Monday with additional safety measures in place.
The district has also activated crisis-support teams for pupils, families and staff, and urged the public not to circulate unverified names, details or graphic images while the investigation continues.
